On behalf of Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan, Co-chairs Brenda Viney and Darlene Sanders presented a specially-developed hybrid rose to the City of Osaka at the 2006 World Rose Convention in Osaka, Japan.
The Rose is a cross with a modern hybrid tea rose and a shrub rose and was named the “Spirit of Vancouver” by its grower Brad Jalbert of Select Roses. The Rose was planted in Utsubo Park in Osaka, one of the World Federation of Rose Societies’ award winning gardens.
The rose plant grows into a shrub of about 3 feet tall and wide and grows well own-root. It also makes a superb standard (tree rose) and is ideal as a specimen plant. It needs typical moderate rose care and flowers all summer long. It blooms in single stems and clusters when established. If grown in a pot, it should be a very large container about 18 by 18 inches or bigger, something like a half oak barrel.
Vancouver grower Brad Jalbert of Select Roses explains what it takes to produce a world-class hybrid rose.
